New York: Antiguan government officials yesterday denied reports that have been circulating on the Internet that Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer was “apprehended” after a revolver was found in his luggage as he arrived at the Mumbai airport last week.
In an account emailed to HBN yesterday, government spokesperson Maurice Merchant, stated, “At no time whatsoever was a firearm or ammunition in the luggage of Prime Minister the Hon. Baldwin Spencer.”
His comments came following a report in Calcutta’s Telegraph that was circulated among members of the ‘Taking Sides’ group, that Spencer was detained and questioned after a gun was found during an X-ray check of his baggage.
But yesterday, Merchant gave a different account in his email. He said that a firearm registered to the Spencer’s Security Lieutenant Uriah Sheppard, complete with all documentation and notifications of travel were checked and cleared by British Airways officials in Antigua for travel to London and by customs officials upon arrival in London.
But “upon arrival in Mumbai, during the clearance of the luggage of the delegation, customs officials informed Lieutenant Sheppard that they were not notified of the arrival of the said firearm and ammunition.”
However, Merchant said that “after the presentation of documentation pertaining to the transport of the said items, it was discovered that there was a break down in communication.”
