Singapore: The consulting arm of Changi Airports International (CAI) plans to do more than just provide consultancy services.
It is looking at operational tie-ups to carve a more permanent presence in four key markets – Russia, the Middle East, China and India.
2006 was a good year for CAI.
Formed to pursue investment in foreign airports, CAI won two major contracts in the past 12 months.
It clinched the deal to operate the new Terminal 1 at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport. And then, just last month, it won the right to manage Abu Dhabi International Airport in the United Arab Emirates.
This is a relationship that could be extended further soon with CAI eyeing a new terminal project there that will expand Abu Dhabi's passenger-handling capacity from the current 6 million to a massive 40 million passengers by 2010.
But CAI's CEO says CAI will have to choose its nodes in the quickly expanding aviation market in the Gulf carefully.
But there is more on the expansion radar.
In India, there are plans to bid for Chennai and Kolkatta airport projects over the next few months.
