Kolkata : The Airports Authority of India is considering a proposal for a third runway at Kolkata airport, put forward by CPI(M) members of Parliament Amitava Nandy and Tarit Baran Topdar.
If the expansion is cleared, there would be no need to set up a second international airport near Kolkata, the pet project of West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.
An AAI official said the proposal has been forwarded to chief secretary Amit Kiran Deb.
Nandy and Topdar want a third runway built towards the southern end of the airport near the Rajarhat New Town area. At present, the primary runway is 3627 metres long and the secondary one 2399m.
"The proposed runway will need almost 2,000 acres of land, which has to be acquired," said Nandy, who represents the Dum Dum constituency. "We have given a detailed feasibility study along with the proposal," he said.
