Mumbai: Indians travelling abroad mostly prefer to smuggle foreign currency, while foreign nationals leaving the Indian shores prefer to smuggle out drugs, according to statistics available with the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs Department posted at the international airport facility in Mumbai.
The monitoring of passengers at Mumbai’s international airport facility has been stepped up in the wake of several instances of foreign currency and drug smuggling being detected in 2006. The immediate impact of this measure can be judged from the fact that in the first month of this year three cases of foreign currency smuggling have been successfully detected by the AIU.
In the 16 cases registered by the AIU at Mumbai in 2006, foreign and Indian currency amounting to over Rs 3.27 crore was seized from mostly Indian nationals travelling abroad.
Interestingly, 16 cases of smuggling drugs were registered against foreign nationals, including Egbruwole Rashidat, who was caught while attempting to smuggle 550 grams of heroin worth Rs 5.5 crore in the international market on July 4, 2006.
