DGCA revamp to take FAA flight path

New Delhi: To manage exponential growth in the aviation sector, the government is planning to strengthen the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). With the number of airlines and fliers increasing rapidly over the past few years, the civil aviation ministry is keen to spruce up the regulator and also provide it with more teeth.
Civil aviation ministry sources said DGCA would be restructured along the lines of the US regulator Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
The government recently signed a pact with the US, paving the way for DGCA to benefit from FAA’s knowledge bank. A pact is now being put in place with the European Union (EU). The two sides are co-operating in areas such as aviation security and safety, air traffic management, technological and industrial co-operation.
These two international aviation regulatory institutions will help the government chart out a path to strengthen and restructure DGCA.
