Mumbai: Backed by peak season passenger traffic and transportation of Haj pilgrims,
Indian (Airlines) broke all its previous records of passenger carriage in the month of December 2006. In December 2006, Indian carried a total number of 8.37 lakh passengers, a growth of 6.5 per cent over the same month in the previous year, the airline said in a statement. From April to December the airline carried 69 lakh passengers.
In the Western Region Indian reported a passenger carriage of 2.5 lakh in December 2006 while in the April to December period the passenger traffic was over 20 lakh. On December 23 a record number of 11,000 passengers were flown by the airline's western region operations.
The airline's international operation has also broken all-time records. In December 2006 Indian (Airlines) carried a total of 2.11 lakh passengers, a growth of 20 per cent over December 2005. Almost 45 per cent of the airline's capacity is deployed on the international network.
In December 2006 and January 2007, Indian Airlines supplemented its international capacity by operating flights to carry Haj pilgrims from India to Jeddah and also carried pilgrims to various upliftment points of India.
