Mumbai: The Mumbai airport’s transition into a modern world-class facility is certainly not going to be a smooth ride. For, the process which includes relocation on a massive scale involves huge costs and adjustments on part of big time players.
After appointing the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority for slum rehabilitation around the airport, the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) — in-charge of redefining and reorienting of facilities as part of the modernisation plan — has issued 60-day notices (till mid-November) to the public sector oil companies in the airport to renegotiate their lease agreements or evict the airport premises.
Aviation fuel suppliers at the Mumbai airport, Bharat Petroleum (BP), Hindustan Petroleum (HP) and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) have confirmed that the MIAL has sent them eviction notices.
The MIAL is attempting to free about 19 acres of land that these three oil PSUs are currently occupying and to relocate them in such a manner that avoids duplication of the facilities.
