New Delhi: With over a 100 unutilised airfields scattered all over the country, launch of regional or state-level airlines to small but important cities could be a profitable venture, an aviation expert said today.
While aviation activities at present are restricted to about 24 airports, the scope for 'city airlines' was massive, Harsh Vardhan, who has worked in Air India, Vayudoot, Sahara Airlines and Jagson, said here.
He said the city-airlines could connect smaller towns to major cities either within the respective states or to other important gateways beyond. As many as 35 such towns and cities have already been identified by the government for development of airports there.
Observing that small-capacity aircraft could be based at these small cities, Vardhan said a three-tier aviation network should be created covering the small cities, the major ones in the same state and the state capitals or major metros.
