The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is weighing the option of constructing steel-reinforced runways at international and domestic airports.
Civil aviation ministry has given its in-principle approval to the proposal of building runways with ‘continuous reinforced concrete pavements’ (CRCP), which can help runways handle more capacity. The proposal is mooted by the steel ministry, which argues that the use of special steel to strengthen runways would help in better utilisation besides, boosting consumption of steel.
“Though we are in favour of using special steel in runways to enhance their capacity and duration, the proposal will be given final nod after it passes a technical check by the AAI,” a government official said.
The civil aviation ministry estimates that investments of Rs 40,000 crore would flow into construction of metro and non-metro airports in the medium term.
