14 more parking bays planned at Chennai

Chennai: The Airports Authority of India will add 14 more aircraft parking bays at the Chennai airport in a year. Construction will begin in April, according to Airport Director Dinesh Kumar.
Talking to The Hindu , he said the increase in domestic, international and cargo traffic had necessitated more parking bays. The space had already been identified. They would accommodate more Airbus 320 aircraft. A separate parking area would be available for smaller jets.
Last year a substantial allocation was made for infrastructure development. Work on five new Airbus 320-compatible parking stands, including two taxi links, was completed. Mr. Dinesh Kumar said two B-747 stands were commissioned in the international apron in July, and two B-737-900 parking stands in the domestic apron became operational in September.
Work on 10 more bays with two `taxi links' had been expedited. Four of the 10 parking stands with one `taxi link' had become operational. Work on the remaining six bays would be completed by March.
The new bays were meant to provide night parking facility to aircraft. The parking stands were being added at a cost of Rs. 37 crore, he said.
