Ranchi: The Birsa Munda airport has major expansion plans in store.
Set to get possession of 100 acres more, the additional land will be given to the 448-acre airport after demarcation of land that is presently shared by the airport and the Indian Army and has been a reason for dispute between the two.
The Ranchi district administration today started the process of demarcating the 1, 121 acres acquired in the early 40’s to set up an air base for the then Royal Air Force. The airport was allotted 546.25 acres of the 1,121 acres. But the airport possesses only 448 acres.
The Indian Army is using the remaining 98 acres allotted to the airport.
The airport has massive expansion plans. It needs about 500 acres more for setting up a new terminal building and another 350 acres for expansion of the runway. The runway will also have 700 m of approach lighting system, the official said.
