A farm worker from Evesham has been jailed for nine months and recommended for deportation after attempting to use a false passport.
Harjit Singh, 25, of no fixed address, was one of five people on a single flight from Birmingham to Toronto in Canada caught travelling on false passports.
It caused a judge to observe that the Air India flight has become so notorious that the police have produced a special "pro forma witness statement" to reduce the time spent dealing with each case.
Singh, who was born in India, was working on a farm in Evesham at the time of his arrest, Warwick Crown Court was told. He pleaded guilty to possessing a false identity document.
Prosecutor Graham Hubbard said that at 4pm on Sunday January 21 Singh arrived at Birmingham Airport to check in for an Air India flight to Toronto.
His documents were checked and it was realised that his passport in the name of Shamus Hussain was false.
Investigations revealed that the passport had been stolen and Singh's photograph inserted into it. When he was questioned Singh admitted that he had been living in this country illegally since 1998 and had paid £2,000 for the false passport so he could get to Canada.
Lawrence Watts, defending, said that after arriving in this country Singh had first worked at a restaurant in Edinburgh and then a farm in Evesham.
