According to Capt GR Gopinath CEO, Air Deccan, aviation has to become central to our economic planning and growth policies. The low cost carrier (LCC) model introduced in India by Air Deccan has led to a phenomenal growth in the usage and reach of air travel. The growth in the aviation sector however entails growth of infrastructure and the implementation of progressive policies. He expects the 2007 Union Budget to address the following issues which are critical for sustaining the boom in the aviation sector.
Infrastructure status: The government must give infrastructure status to the aviation industry.
ATF Taxes: The government should consider reducing the sales tax on ATF along with creating a uniform sales tax structure throughout the country.
Tax exemption on Lease rentals: Exemption of tax on lease rentals on aircraft under section 10 (15 A) of the Income Tax Act 1961 must continue beyond the current fiscal.
Income Tax exemption for expatriate manpower: The government should not tax foreign pilots and technical manpower under Indian Income tax laws but treat them as a scarce technical manpower.
