Indians are flying overseas to shop like never before

New Delhi: In recent years, the number of Indians flying overseas has gone up significantly and most of them are also ready to splurge on duty-free shopping.
A joint survey, conducted by ACNielsen and Alpha Futures, shows that Indians account for 30 per cent of the bulk of international duty-free shopping across airports such as Dubai, Singapore, and Malaysia.
According to the study, 24 per cent of the population surveyed had travelled abroad and 12 per cent had travelled in the past one year. Of the total traffic of air-travellers going abroad, at least 30 per cent are first-time fliers.
Interestingly, there is an almost even split between those travelling on work (51 per cent) and those travelling for leisure (44 per cent). The frequency of travel abroad indicates that more than half travel at least once a year, and the most popular destinations are the US, West Asia, and Singapore.
A majority of those travelling abroad (60 per cent) said they shop at airports and are already familiar with the concept of duty-free shopping.
Indian travellers love to splurge on alcohol, tobacco, and chocolates at the duty-free shops.
