Only 3 agencies for airport ground-handling

New Delhi: To bring international standards to the metropolitan airports of the country, the Government today has finalized a policy on Ground Handling in the Airports. This step is expected to ensure a competitive environment and offer greater choices for airlines.
For all metropolitan airports, i.e. Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Hyderabad and the Greenfield airports presently under construction in these cities, the ground handling will be carried out by:
* The respective airport operator (AAI or other operators as the case may be) itself or its Joint venture(JV);
* Subsidiary companies of the National carriers i.e. Air India/Indian Airlines or their joint ventures specialized in ground handling services. Third Party handling will also be permitted to these subsidiaries or their JVs on the basis of revenue sharing with airport operator.
* Any other ground handling service providers selected through competitive bidding on revenue sharing basis by the airport operator subject to security clearance by the Government and observance of performance standards as may be laid down by the airport operator.
Airlines or entities presently involved in ground handling which are not covered under the policy given above will not be permitted to undertake self handling or third party handling with effect from 1st January, 2009.
