Blocks runway, causes delays
New Delhi: The Air India plane that
made an emergency landing on Monday
has blocked one of two runways at
New Delhi's international airport,
delaying air traffic, officials said.
The Airbus A310 flying from Shanghai
and Bangkok made the emergency landing
around 7 a.m. (0130 GMT) after problems
with its landing gear, they said.
"The runway is expected to be cleared
by 3 p.m. (0930 GMT)," said Maushumi
Chakravarty, spokeswoman for the civil
aviation ministry.The passengers disembarked
safely onto the runway after the landing but
as the plane was being towed away its front
wheel collapsed, leaving the aircraft's tail
jutting out onto the runway near one end.

The Bangkok-New Delhi (AI-249) flight - with 169 passengers on board – skidded at the taxiway after developing landing gear problems.
The snag disrupted air traffic for about three hours and threw flight schedules out of gear.
The main runway of the Indira Gandhi International airport remained closed. However, the second runway was operational.

Pilot received an "unsafe warning"
Just before landing at the Indira Gandhi
International Airport here, the pilot of
the Airbus A-310 received an "unsafe
warning" about the problems in its
under-carriage and the landing gear,
sources said. The pilot then alerted the
Air Traffic Control which asked him to
land on the main runway in full emergency
conditions. After it landed on the main
runway, it could not move on to the taxi
way to clear the main runway. The
passengers and the baggage were offloaded
on the main runway itself. As soon as the
tractor tried to tow it away, the nose-wheel
collapsed and the plane got stuck on
the main runway.
