B.C. offers deal to Air India bomb maker

Vancouver: Convicted Air India bomb maker Inderjit Singh Reyat has been offered a deal on outstanding perjury charges if he co-operates with the continuing investigation into the 1985 mid-air explosion that killed 329 people.
A reliable source familiar with the offer confirmed that Mr. Reyat has been told that he would receive a sentence in the range of two to five years in exchange for valuable information about others who were involved in the deadly scheme.
A second source said he had heard indirectly about the offer. He was told that Mr. Reyat was cool to what had been proposed.
“They want him to tell them what they want to hear. According to my understanding, he said that is not what happened,” the source said. Mr. Reyat felt he was being asked to lie, the source added.
Neither Crown counsel nor Mr. Reyat's defence lawyer were available for comment yesterday.
Mr. Reyat is the only person to have been convicted in connection with the bomb explosion that remains one of the most infamous acts of terrorism in modern history. He is currently in prison but will have served his entire sentence by Feb. 9. However, it is not yet clear whether he will be released after serving his time.
