A 48-year-old Indian father who was flying home for medical treatment died in Bahrain after being bumped off a Gulf Air flight. Kochukrishnan Mohanan died of a heart attack at a relative's house one hour before he was scheduled to catch another Gulf Air flight to Trivandrum on the following day.
Mr Mohanan leaves a wife and two daughters, aged 20 and 17, who live in their native Kollam, Kerala.
He had been employed as a machine operator with Havelock AHI since 2002, but had decided to go back to his family and undergo further treatment for a heart condition, said Havelock business support manager M V Raju.
"The company had provided him with a one-way ticket by Gulf Air (GF 60) for Thursday," said Mr Raju.
"But, on reaching the airport with a confirmed ticket and checking in the baggage, the airline informed him that the flight was overbooked and he could not travel.
"He was issued a boarding pass to travel the next day. The airline also promised that the checked in baggage would be sent when he boarded the flight."
Mr Mohanan suffered a heart attack at a relative's house just one hour before he was scheduled to leave for the airport on Friday evening, said Mr Raju.
"He collapsed and died instantly. The company has made all the arrangements to repatriate his body to Trivandrum," he revealed.
When Mr Mohanan's brother-in-law Sivanandan Thulaseedaran Mr Thulaseedharan tried to collect Mr Mohanan's baggage from the Bahrain Airport yesterday, they replied that it would have either reached Trivandrum or may be missing, said Mr Raju.
"However, he was able to claim the baggage in Trivandrum," he noted.
"It is surprising how the baggage was sent when the passenger with boarding pass did not board the flight.
