MIAL ends airport rehabilitation deal with HDIL

Almost six years after the contract was awarded, the Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL) has terminated its agreement with Housing Development & Infrastructure Ltd (HDIL) to rehabilitate almost 28,000 slumdwellers spread across the airport land. MIAL took the decision, saying HDIL has breached many conditions, including not completing the rehabilitation work as per schedule in 2011.
HDIL has not accepted the termination notice and will soon challenge the decision in court. Said Sarang Wadhawan, HDIL's vice-chairman and managing director, "MIAL's charges are unsubstantiated. If we had not fulfilled the conditions of rehabilitating 1,000 slum families, it would not have been possible to construct the Sahar elevated road. We have constructed 26,000 flats and are ready to shift the slumdwellers, but for the lack of the government's clarity in finalizing the eligibility criteria.''
