Passports go missing at Chennai airport

Chennai: Losing passports abroad is not uncommon, but when passengers arriving at the Chennai airport begin to lose them, you begin to wonder why. Going by the police, as many as 29 cases of passports going missing at the Chennai airport have been registered between January 1 and July 31 this year. “We received about four cases in July alone,” said a police officer.
J. Jahangir (30) of Adambakkam in Chennai says he lost his passport at the customs counter last month and has since been struggling to get a new one so that he can apply for a job abroad.
Nishanthi of Cuddalore who returned on July 6 from Dubai on an Air Arabia flight,  complains her passport went missing after it was checked at the customs counter.
However, customs officials say that the incidents were rare, but  also pointed out that the crowding of people near the Red Channel and payment counters could lead to such mix-ups and losses.
