‘Name airport after Rajaram Maharaj’

Kolhapur: On the eve of birth anniversary celebration of Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj, the erstwhile ruler of Kolhapur princely state, the residents have demanded the government to name the city's airport after him.

A group of 25 social activists sat on hunger strike on Thursday in front of Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj's Statue at a chowk in the city to push for their demand.

Udaysingh Rajeyadav, a member of the group, said, "We are fighting for the demand since the last ten years. All the political leaders and social organisations have supported our demand, but the state government has not taken any action yet. Every year, we sit on hunger strike in front of Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj's statue to attract the attention of the government toward our demand. We hope that our demand will be accepted."

"When we met Hatkanangale MP Raju Shetty in 2012, he supported our demand and said that he will ask the authorities concerned to look into the matter. We expect that to happen before the Kolhapur airport starts functioning," he said.
