Andar ki baat for smugglers at Ahmedabad airport

Ahmedabad: From hiding gold bars in their private parts to concealing them as powder in the wires of suitcase handles, smugglers have been devising increasingly cunning ways to bring gold into the country. In one case, an old woman in a wheelchair had hidden gold bars in her under-garments but was caught. In another case, the smuggler had wrapped the gold packet under the luggage trolley.

Since January this year, the customs department alone has seized 47.97 kg gold worth Rs 13.83 crore and detained 57 smugglers at the city's airport. "Most of those detained were coming from Dubai, Sharjah, Doha or Singapore," said a customs official. As many as six cases of passengers on domestic flight being detained for smuggling gold have been reported.

On Saturday, three men were held with over 1 kg gold hidden as bars in their rectum. They were coming from Sharjah and were detained by customs.
