Civil Aviation Minister Walks the Inspection Talk at Airport

Chennai: Even after the Chief Minister had flown out to Bangalore on Saturday morning, officers at the airport were fretting and anxious. For, at 9.30 pm, an Air India flight from Delhi bearing the Minister of Civil Aviation Ashok Gajapathi Raju, arrived at Chennai - and their much-awaited acid-test of an inspection officially began.

To the surprise of most of them, unlike previous inspections, this one was extensive. “The minister was prepared to walk to each and every corner of the terminals and even pointed at areas and asked to see them impromptu,” admitted an official with the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Such was his intent to walk that the 63-year-old MoCA came wearing walking shoes in preparation. This inspection was on the cards ever since the minister’s secretary did an incognito visit and took several damaging pictures of the poor state of Chennai airport. AAI was given a month to spruce things up before this inspection.
