First batch of state Haj pilgrims flies out of Chennai

Chennai: The first batch of 450 Haj pilgrims from the state flew out of the city on Monday evening. At Chennai airport, the only departure point in the state, the Airports Authority of India has made special arrangements for the 3,000 pilgrims from the state, a majority of them from Vellore district, who will fly out in seven flights until September 27. Foreign exchange counters have been set up, shamianas erected and drinking water facilities and foreign exchange counters have been opened.

The pilgrims who left on Monday had undergone an orientation programme on dos and don'ts and told that anyone staying back in Saudi Arabia after the pilgrimage could be liable for prosecution by the authorities there.
