‘Ministry didn’t seek secretary transfer’

Just three weeks after the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi over-ruled the civil aviation ministry’s recommendation for a two-year extension of tenure for Air India chairman and managing director (CMD) Rohit Nandan, the government has transferred civil aviation secretary Ashok Lavasa to the environment ministry despite the fact that its own civil aviation ministry had not recommended any such transfer. However, the aviation ministry has accepted the transfer without any objections. Mr. Lavasa, an IAS officer of the 1980 batch belonging to the Haryana cadre, was appointed the environment secretary on Friday and senior IAS officer of the 1979 batch belonging to the Kerala cadre V. Somasundaran was appointed the new union civil aviation secretary.
