New scanner to cut queues at airport

Chennai: assenger handling at Chennai airport is expected to become more efficient with Airports Authority of India planning to install another inline baggage scanning system at the international terminal.

The system, to be brought from Calicut airport, is expected to be ready in a month. There are three inline baggage scanners at the new international terminal, eliminating the need for passengers to scan their check-in baggage before boarding.

In the inline system, bags dropped into a conveyor at the check-in counters, are scanned using a high-slice X-ray as they move towards the basement. The conveyor can handle 1,200 bags in an hour. The machine segregates bags with suspicious content automatically. The bags pass through four levels of detection and the screener can see five images of the same bag from different angles. The bags are monitored from six workstations, while a supervisor looks after the entire operations.
