Now, 10K Reasons for Airport Staff to learn Hindi

Chennai: Signing documents and reports in Hindi might just become a fad among airport employees here, especially if they could get some extra cash. In a move imposed by the Airports Authority of India’s Hindi Implementation Committee recently, all non-Hindi speaking employees are in contention for a Rs 10,000 cash award, if they can manage the simple task of writing or even signing in Hindi, as many times.

“This was instituted a short while ago and will run for the period of this financial year. Most people cannot learn to write in Hindi so quickly, but signing will be quite easy,” said an AAI official, as there is renewed interest on the eve of Hindi Week. “Effectively, lot of employees have been told that one sign in Hindi will fetch them one rupee,” the official added.

Much like most incentives given under the Rajbhasha Adhiniyam (Official Languages Act 1963), three persons will be eligible for the ‘award’ with the only requirement being that their counters must clock 10,000 words or more. At the meeting held recently, AAI’s regional executive director (Southern Region) captain Deepak Shastri said, “Several non-Hindi speaking officials with AAI have gone to other airports, learnt the language and returned with renewed confidence and are even writing in Hindi. It must not be looked at like a rule or exam, only then will it be effective.”
