New Delhi: The restriction on having a second airport within 150km radius of an existing one may soon go, paving the way for Indian cities to have multiple airports in the future. The aviation ministry is examining if the barred distance can be reduced to 100km, if not lower.
However, whether this proposed change benefits metros with PPP airports like Delhi, Hyderabad and Bangalore remains to be seen. The concession agreements with private developers are tilted in their favour and not the flying public. "In these metros, the private developer has to be on board for having another airport in the vicinity," said a senior ministry official.
In fact to avoid such lop-sided PPP agreements in the future, aviation minister Ashok Gajapati Raju has issued instructions to have a public-private model in place which concerns of all stakeholders are taken into consideration. The order issued by Raju's office for says: "Consultation should be help prior to entering into PPP agreements and views of stakeholders (government agencies; airport operators; airlines; passenger associations and travel operators) should be given due consideration before finalizing these agreements."
