Sawaikar panel to take up airport issue with Centre

Panaji: South Goa BJP MP Narendra Sawaikar, who heads the Dabolim airport advisory committee, will take up the issue of the Indian Navy holding on to airport land, with both the state and central governments.

The continued reluctance of the Indian Navy in Goa to hand over land for the expansion of the Dabolim airport has irked the delegation of Goan MLAs that accompanied Sawaikar on an inspection visit of the new airport terminal building.

Accompanying Sawaikar were Goa environment and forest minister Alina Saldanha and local MLAs Carlos Almeida (Vasco) and Mauvin Godinho (Dabolim).

The team was irked to see that the layout at the building was very haphazard. Saldanha told TOI that the passengers have complained to her that the various facilities for the passengers are located at different places; while the check-in counter is on one floor, the security is at another place and the immigration is somewhere else. This forces passengers to walk up and down repeatedly before boarding the flight. When this was pointed out to the airport director, he repeatedly said that the layout was such because of "constraints of space."
