Tab battery sends Mangalore airport into a tizzy

Bangalore: : High drama prevailed at Mangalore International Airport when a Kerala passenger set to board a Sharjah flight was detained with suspicious baggage on Saturday night. A flurry of checks was carried out throughout Sunday before security agencies cleared him in the evening. Airport sources said Abdul Khader, 29, resident of Muttamkunnil Shiriyar in Kumble of Kasargod district, reportedly obliged a neighbour's request to carry a set of books for her brother who stays in Sharjah. What Khader didn't realize was that the book parcel also had a tablet with faulty battery and a bottle of liquid to treat an infection. When Khader proceeded for security check at the Mangalore airport to board the Jet Airways flight 9W352 at 11.15pm on Saturday, CISF personnel found a suspicious packet in his luggage. Since Khader didn't know the contents of the parcel sent in by his neighbour, he couldn't provide a coherent answer.

He explained an 'exposed circuitry' — the faulty battery of a tablet which aroused security personnel's suspicion — as part of a parcel of books. Mangalore City police chief R Hithendra told TOI that the security personnel subjected his luggage to a thorough check. What fuelled their doubts was a bottle of liquid next to the object. On closer examination, CISF personnel concluded that it was the faulty swollen battery of the tablet. And the bottle of liquid turned out to be hydrogen peroxide used to clean infected wounds.
