Three held at airport with gold worth Rs 26 lakh

Ahmedabad: The customs department on Saturday held three men for smuggling gold worth Rs 26 lakh at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Delhi-based Junaid, Asim and Mohsin were caught with 1,043 gram of gold bars concealed in their rectums.

According to officials, all three are first-time carriers and chose to enter through Ahmedabad in a bid to escape the customs. This is the fifth such incident in this month and 43rd incident of gold smuggling since January 2014, since when the customs department has seized 47.97 kg of gold worth Rs 13.83 crore and detained 57 smugglers at the city airport.

The three men had come in Air Arabia flight G9-483 from Sharjah. Intelligence unit officials found their movement suspicious and detained them for checking. "The gold pieces weighing 262 gram, 391 gram and 390 gram were wrapped with black tape and hidden in the rectums by Junaid, Asim and Mohsin," said a customs official.
