New system to check suspicious passengers at airport from Thursday

New Delhi: Stepping up its measures to check smuggling, a new electronic system will be in place from Thursday to keep a track on suspicious passengers.
The Indian Customs Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS), developed by the National Informatics Centre with the help of Directorate General of Systems under the Finance Ministry, will be inaugurated tomorrow at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here, official sources said.
The US-like system acts as an electronic database of all passengers, crew and other airline staff entering and exiting the international airport here, they said.
The APIS red flags suspicious passengers on the basis of their movement and other parameters and give a lead to customs officials for follow-up, the sources said.
