Surat dist officials blame AAI for security lapse

Surat: Rajender Kumar, district collector and chairman of Surat Airport Development Committee, said the Airport Authority of India (AAI) officials from the western region were not so vigilant about the issue of improving and strengthening the security at the airport here.

"My predecessors and even I had raised the issue of the compound wall at the airport, which is not as per the standard norms. The 175-metre long fencing was broken, which had allowed stray cattle to venture on to the runway; construction of road along the 400 metre of the perimeter wall was not done and there were no high-voltage lights along the boundary in the 312 hectare area. The AAI authorities had failed to pay attention to these and other important issues," Kumar told TOI.

During his several meetings with AAI officials here since Thursday last's incident of a buffalo hitting a SpiceJet aircraft here on the runway, Kumar raised issues concerning the security at the airport. He asked the AAI officials to initiate work to build the perimeter wall as per the standard norms.
