AI arranges special flight for stranded wedding party

Kolkata:  Marriages, they say, are made in heaven. One such wedding, set to take place in the heavenly city of Kathmandu nearly crash landed when the flight they were booked on was cancelled on Saturday afternoon. When all seemed lost, the bride broke into sobs. Tears, they say, can move mountains. In this case, it was a monumental achievement: her plight so moved the airline's officials that they organized a special flight to the Himalayan country on Sunday.

When Nikita Tulsyan and her parents walked into the airport at 11am on Saturday to take the 12.50pm Air India flight — AI247 — to Kathmandu, they had no clue about the ordeal ahead. As other relatives and friends trickled in over the next half hour and the wedding-bound party swelled, Nikita's nervous anticipation gave way to unalloyed joy. Soon, all 81 members booked to travel arrived. Barring 10 who were the invitees of groom Nishant Deriya, the rest were Nikita's invitees. Altogether, 122 passengers were booked on the flight.
While checking in the hefty luggage after the cumbersome X-ray queue and collecting boarding passes, the passengers learned the flight was delayed by 45 minutes. It did not irk anyone. With so many travelling together, time would fly. The party queued up for security check with gold and diamond jewellery laden hand bags. Once the final hurdle was crossed, they spanned out in the terminal, checking shops and restaurants.
