Airports blind spot

Ahmedabad: Adeserted staircase at the domestic airport building next to the parking space where VVIPs' aircraft are parked is an open invitation to trouble. The issue came to the notice of the airport officials recently but all they did was to tie wires and place a sheet of tin, something anyone with mala fide intention will not have to break sweat to breach. The fact that the stairs are only 10 to 15 feet away from the parking lot makes it a potential danger zone any time, sources at the airport say.

The need for strict security becomes all the more important as scores of VVIPs and hundreds of delegates are likely to visit the city beginning the first week of January to participate in Bharatiya Pravasi Divas celebrations and Vibrant Gujarat Investors' Summit, they say. Thousands of people came to the airport to see their kin and friends off to Mecca for Haj last month. Their flight to Saudi Arabia used to take off at night around 1.30.

One night about 10 of these enthusiastic visitors took the stairs and reached the second floor of the building to see the plane of the Haj pilgrims depart. Sources say this came to the notice of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel who rushed there and made the relatives climb down. Though it was a serious security issue, no note of the incident was made anywhere, said highly placed sources at the airport. The stairs lead to the main building of the domestic airport but they are open and remain unsecured.
