Land acquisition trouble continues to hinder airport project take-off

Pune: The independent airport project at the site initially marked for the Khed special economic zone (SEZ) at Rajgurunagar off the Pune-Nashik highway, remains bogged down by technical hitches related to the transfer and acquisition of land required for the project. Ajit N Relekar, deputy collector and regional director of Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), told members of the Airport Advisory Committee (AAC) here on Saturday that the state authorities have identified 1,260 hectare land, including 800 hectare that was notified for the Khed SEZ, and an initial survey has already been done by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) regarding feasibility of the site. "The 800 hectare was acquired by the MIDC for the SEZ purpose and was notified for the same.

The land presently belongs to the MIDC and will have to be transferred to the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), which has been mandated as the special planning authority for the airport project," said Relekar. The authorities are now going into the technical issues as to how de-notification and transfer of the 800 hectare land from the SEZ to the airport project is to be executed. "We are hoping that the state chief minister will soon call a meeting to iron out these issues," he said.
