Memorial for Mangaluru air crash victims near Kulur Bridge

Mangaluru: The district administration on Wednesday finalised the spot near Kulur bridge, off NH 66, where 12 unidentified bodies of the May 2010 Mangaluru air crash victims had been buried, as the spot to bring up the memorial for air crash victims. As many as 158 people were killed in the May 22 air crash involving Air India Express 818 Dubai-Mangaluru flight.

Chairing a meeting in this regard, Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim said though a spot near the exit road of the Mangaluru International Airport was identified to be developed as a park in memory of the victims, some people felt the place was not suitable. It would constantly be reminding passengers and kith and kin of the victims of the ghastly tragedy, people said.

Therefore, the burial site, measuring about 43 cents (close to half an acre), has been zeroed in. The leaner site belonging to New Mangalore Port Trust could be developed as a park. The NMPT, the Air India the Airports Authority of India have agreed to contribute to the development of the park. Once the park is developed, the Mangaluru City Corporation would be entrusted with its maintenance, Mr. Ibrahim said.

However, the exact time as to when the Park would come up depends upon the concurrence of Ministries controlling the agencies concerned, he added.
