No green signal yet for Tata-Airbus plan to build transport aircraft for IAF

New Delhi:  The defence ministry on Wednesday once again deferred a decision on the long-delayed Rs 13,000 crore mega project for the private sector to supply 56 medium transport aircraft to the IAF, in which there is only a single bidder, the Tata-Airbus consortium, in the fray.

After the defence acquisitions council (DAC) meeting, chaired by Manohar Parrikar, officials said "certain activities and specialised briefing" on the project was required before a decision can be taken whether to press ahead with the project.

The DAC did clear the upgradation of the Bharat Electronics' Samyukta electronic warfare system for the Army for Rs 1,682 crore, P-7 heavy-drop parachute platform systems for Rs 402 crore and MTU diesel engines for Coast Guard for Rs 36 crore. It also approved the re-floating of the Rs 2,324 crore tender for construction of four naval survey vessels, which will now carry advanced light helicopters instead of the earlier light utility ones.
