SIA optimistic about Vistara's growth in India

Singapore: Singapore Airlines (SIA) has said it sees huge potential for further growth in the Indian aviation market, after its new joint venture Vistara airlines received the green light to start operations on Monday (Dec 15). This is SIA's third attempt to enter the Indian market.

Mr Nicholas Ionides, vice president of public affairs at SIA, said the number of trips that people take per year in the Indian market is still "very, very low" compared to many other countries.

"We have the best partner that you can have in India in TATA Sons, the biggest conglomerate in India and the best name in Indian business, and the time is right for a new full-serviced airline to enter into that market," he said.

Vistara will be the third full-service carrier in India, after state-run Air India and Jet Airways.

However, analysts said that in a burgeoning market where the Indian consumer is spoilt for choice, new entrants could find it hard to navigate a growth path.
