Smugglers withgold in stomachheld at airport

Chennai: Customs officials thwarted an attempt to smuggle gold into the country by two men who arrived in the city on a flight from Malaysia on Sunday morning after swallowing 350g of gold each.

Officials intercepted the men at the customs checkpoint after they arrived on a Malaysian airlines flight around 11am on Sunday. The officials planned to wait for them to pass out the smuggled gold but took them to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital after one of them complained of nausea.

Officials said they would book the two men after they recover the gold.

"We initially tried to make them eat to retrieve the gold naturally," a senior customs official said. "But one of them complained of weakness and nausea so we shifted them to the hospital. They are under observation of doctors. Their condition is stable."
