Spicejet’s saviour

Mumbai: Ajay Singh, 42, who is reported to have come to ailing Spicejet's rescue with possible investments of over Rs 1,000 crore, is known to be a bit of a turnaround artist.

In the list of projects he has taken up in his career include turning around the notorious Delhi Transport Corporation in 1995 when it was loss-making white elephant with over 40,000 employees but only 400 buses. He turned around the corporation in two years.

A few years later, he combined with an old friend and a known automobile industry hand -- BVR Subbu - to try and turn around the sinking Daewoo Motors.

Somewhere along the line, he set his sights on the defunct ModiLuft, which he turned around and made it what we know today as Spicejet. Singh who holds a Master's degree in business administration from Cornell University, a bachelor's degree in law from the University of Delhi and a B Tech from IIT, served as a Director of SpiceJet Ltd until August 27, 2010. He still has a 4 per cent stake in the airline, though he offloaded majority equity to Kalanidhi Maran in 2010.
