Air India crewmember arrested by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence

Mumbai: Two gold smugglers — who missed their Air India flight from Dubai and were thus unable to liaison with their accomplice in the airline’s flight crew to sneak out the yellow metal — were caught at the Mumbai airport after they decided to go ahead with the plan and tried smuggling it out themselves. Their Air India accomplice was also subsequently held after they revealed his involvement in the interrogation, along with the mastermind who was waiting outside the airport to receive the gold worth Rs 1.76 crore.

According to officials in the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), they had received a tip-off about the smuggling attempt and reached the airport to intercept them. At around the same time in Dubai, the two carriers, Piyush Jasraj Soni and Sakina Barafwala, missed their midnight Air India flight from Dubai, but decided to go ahead with the plan. The flight is believed to have been AI 981, but officials could not confirm this fact.

“They landed at Mumbai airport at around 4:30 am on Thursday from Oman Airways flight WY201 and were held while trying to cross the green channel,” said an official from the DRI. The flight had originated from Muscat and the two seem to have hurriedly travelled there to take the next available flight. Upon searching, 6.8 kg of gold worth Rs 1.76 crore was recovered from the two.
