False Ceiling Panel Crashes at Chennai Airport

Chennai: With barely a month left to go before private firms make their bids to take control of the Chennai Airport, a portion of the false ceiling came crashing down.

The incident occurred at 5.30 am, fortunately in the domestic arrival terminal, where influx of passengers is low at that time. "Traffic for departing passengers is huge and the crowds are really massive between 4 am and 8 am, if it had happened during that time, people could have got injured,” an airline employee said.

According to sources in the airport, the gypsum board based ceiling section fell right next to the CCTV monitoring centre - which is close to the baggage carousels (conveyor belts), where passengers flock. There is no official count for how many times this problem has occurred since the airport opened its doors in 2013, but sources said it has happened at least eight times. ?The ceiling section came crashing down and was first noticed by security and cleaning crew who were in the vicinity.
