Telangana offers to deploy anti-terror unit at airport

Hyderabad: With the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) a probable terrorist target, Telangana police have sent a proposal to the Union ministry of civil aviation offering to deploy anti-terror unit Organisation for Counter Terrorist Operations (Octopus) on the airport premises besides assigning it 'preferential' roles during a crisis.

The issue of Octopus deployment cropped up during a recent meeting between the police, CISF, civil aviation and airport management. Telangana police reportedly suggested that with the changing security scenario and regular terror alerts, permanent deployment of Octopus personnel is necessary. The heightened alert comes especially after some Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) sympathisers were caught in the city, besides threats from local terror groups.
