10kg gold seized from duo at Cochin airport

Kochi: In separate seizures, 10kg gold worth Rs 2.7 crore was seized from two passengers on Friday. Directorate of revenue intelligence officials seized eight kilogram gold valued at Rs 2.2 crore from a passenger who had arrived from Dubai at the Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) at 6pm.

Acting on specific information, officials intercepted Jamal, a resident of Perumbavoor, after he walked out through the green channel. He had hidden the gold bars, weighing one kilogram each, in his baggage, officials said. The gold was meant to be handed over to someone in Andhra Pradesh, officials said. Jamal was a carrier and was paid for smuggling gold. Officials were interrogating Jamal at the time of going to press.
In the second case, customs officials seized two gold bars, weighing two kilograms, valued at Rs 55 lakh. The bars were concealed in the rear toilet in a recess under the wash basin of a flight that arrived from Dubai. The gold was recovered during the routine rummaging of flight. An examination by the gold assayer showed that the gold bars were of 24 carat purity.
