SpiceJet short of planes to meet flight schedules

New Delhi: Uncertainty yet again shrouds low-cost carrier (LCC) SpiceJet's ability to operate all its flights in the summer schedule. Without being sure how many planes it would have, the directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) approved 278 daily flights for the budget carrier. But with leasors threatening to take planes back, the airline is looking at operating 235 daily — almost 20% less than the approved schedule — flights by mid-April.

The airline currently has 17 Boeing 737s and 15 Q400s — sufficient to operate about 220 daily flights. SpiceJet lost many of its Boeing planes after the Delhi High Court this month ordered the aviation regulator to deregister the jets, following disputes with three leasors. As many as 21 leased aircraft of the airline had been repossessed by leasors some months back, said an official.
