Tiruchy: Around 14 kg of gold has mysteriously gone missing from the safe vaults at the Customs and Central Excise office here. The theft came to light during a routine audit of the vaults on Saturday night, and the officials lodged a complaint with the police.
The gold seized by the customs officials from smugglers and unclaimed gold from the airport are usually kept at the safe vaults in the office on Williams Road.
The customs officials were shocked when they opened the safe vaults on Saturday night to secure seven kg of gold bars recovered from the Tiruchy International Airport on Friday night.
After they found gold bars missing, the officials conducted an audit through which they came to know that gold bars, weighing 14 kilograms, were missing from the vaults.
