7 Kg Gold Seized; 2 Tiruchy Airport Staff Under Lens

Tiruchy: Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) sleuths at the Tiruchy International Airport seized a rich haul of seven kgs of gold bars, worth Rs 1.80 crore in the open market, from an air passenger, who arrived on a Tiger Airways flight from Singapore, late on Friday.

An Airport Medical Officer and his assistant, suspected to be in cahoots with the smuggler, were also brought under the lens.

This is one of the largest  gold hauls in the airport in the recent past. Since the airport operates many flights to various countries like Singapore, Malaysia and UAE, gold smuggling is often reported.

On Friday, a Tiger Airways flight reached Tiruchy at around 10.50 pm. As usual, the airport officials were scanning the belongings of passengers when the Air Intelligence Unit officials grew suspicious of a passenger, who was loitering around the transit area and had abandoned a duffle bag at a secluded place near the immigration area.

Noticing this, the officials rushed and caught him red-handed and took hold of the bag.
