Forest Ministry okays Navi Mumbai airport on condition it will make adjoining area unattractive for birds

Mumbai: While the United Progressive Alliance government struggled for years over granting green clearances to Navi Mumbai airport, located in an area rich in mangroves, the Modi regime is making a significant exception that will allow the long-pending project to take off.
The Prakash Javadekar-led environment ministry has made a key exemption for Navi Mumbai International Airport, waiving an earlier requirement that a mangrove sanctuary be created by the airport's developers. Instead, the ministry has now asked for ways to make the designated mangrove area adjoining the airport 'unattractive' to birds.
The exemption for the project comes within days of the green clearance given by the ministry for Mumbai's Coastal Road.
