Recent radar malfunction paints a worrisome picture for air traffic

Aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has set up an investigation into the instance of the radar control and monitoring system in Andheri malfunctioning a few days ago.
During the evening peak hours on June 20, the system, set up at the ATS complex in Andheri (East), began buzzing with numerous desperate calls from air traffic controllers, complaining about software malfunction. The controllers were worried that if the problem was not fixed immediately, it would have a cascading effect on the air traffic in the region. The situation was rectified after an hour of hectic efforts as there were just two CNS officials on shift, one of whom had to compulsorily sit at the monitoring station.
Around 50 flight movements on an average take place during the peak hours at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA), which is considered among the busiest airports in Asia.
A senior CNS official said, " We were fortunate that there were two officials on duty that day. On most days, we have just one." Generally, at least three CNS officials are required per shift.
